A beginning surfer who is inhibited from performing properly in the water due to his lack of experience

Barreled

​To be completely covered by the wave while maintaining composure on one’s surfboard

Bitchen’

​Origin: Bitch. With as much tenacity as one would project the power behind the word Bitch, but instead it is used in a positive connotation describing the actions of another

Choice

After observing one’s options, the acknowledgement that the said decision was the most appropriate manner in which to move forward

The Curl

The unbroken part of the wave between the barrel and stagnant water; Also known as the face of the wave

Cutback

When a surfer changes directions at the lip of the wave heading back towards the barrel momentarily

Dank

To describe a phenomenal experience in a manner befitting a voluptuous, and satisfactory exploitation of senses Ex: “Bro, how dank was that Garlic Sauce at the Turkish spot!?”

Drop-in

When a surfer paddles in ‘The Curl’ of the wave, and proceeds to stand up

Green-room

Used when referencing being in the barrel of the wave

Gnarly

An intense expression of appreciation

Hang-ten

When a surfer walks to the nose of his board and hangs all ten toes off the front of his board

Hectic

A descriptive response to a more organized form of chaos presenting itself in an unexpected way, with the ability to scope the parameters of positive connotation and negative connotation

Killer

To slaughter the metaphorical nail upon the head of one’s expectations

Kook

A surfer who gets in the way of other surfers, and does not know or respect the cardinal rules of surfing

Legit

Short for Legitimate. Used to show the approval to peers

The Lip

The apex of the curl where the transmutation of Curl to Barrel first takes place

Pitted

Being deeper in the barrel than being ‘Shaked’ with only a fool’s hope of making it out

Rad

Short for radical

Shacked

The process of pulling into the Barrel and riding in it, with the intention of making it out of the barrel and back into the curl

Shaka

Purposeful shaking of the wrist whilst folding down the index, middle, and ring figures accompanied by extended pinky and thumb. Variations include, The Count Shakula, The Shakalemoose, The Swastashaka, The ShawalakaStein, Shawkayalater

An intense performance of surfing duties manifested in the physical form of ‘Spray'

Snap

When a surfer prepares oneself for a cutback on a wave, but instead of turning directions redirects all force back towards their initial direction while still emulating a generous amount of ‘Spray’

Spray

The expulsion of water in a concentrated form after a fierce ‘cut back’

Steller

A rare, yet immensely satisfying form of ‘Choice’ i.e. The Halley’s Comet of ‘Choice’
